Taylor Swift endorses Kamala Harris/Tim Walz for president/vice president for 2024 Presidential Election!

The Impact of Taylor Swift's Endorsement on the 2024 Presidential Election

1. Introduction

A popular narrative held by the media is that celebrities have the unique ability to influence public opinion and voting behavior. This is particularly true regarding political endorsements. When high-profile people endorse a particular candidate, they are inviting their audience to consider supporting that candidate, basing their endorsement on shared values. Celebrities provide free media to the candidate and are capable of substantially increasing voter knowledge via their endorsements. The fact that these endorsements generate extensive free media attention is especially important in primary races, where lesser-known candidates seek name recognition in order to be competitive against a better-known opponent. Therefore, it is no surprise that the presidential race is the one with the most endorsements.

It is important to note, however, that not everything can be used as an endorsement, but that people respond differently to different types of endorsements. For instance, rankings of forms of communication that persuade the public report that the least persuasive one on average is celebrity endorsements. Indeed, previous studies mainly find that celebrity endorsements do not change voting behavior, attendance at political rallies, participation in political discussions, meeting with elected officials, trust in the political system, or political entertainment to any extent. There are a few partial exceptions, though. In particular, some studies find that celebrity endorsements during political campaigns lead to a reduction in the margin of support for the candidate opposed to the political ideology espoused in the advertisement; whereas others find that they can increase political interest and mobilize people who feel marginalized. In contrast, this paper does not find any relationship between attendance at feminist protest events, political engagement or conversation, and political knowledge from the endorsement. Moreover, our negative result is for a maximum case scenario; the absence of candidate-supplied statements is leveraged with the presence of positive out-group cues provided in the celebrity endorsements, both increasing the potential efficacy of the endorsements.

1.1. Background of Taylor Swift as a Public Figure

Taylor Swift is a modern pop culture icon not just because of her music but also because of her social and political voice. In recent years, Swift has been using her social media presence to express her strong support for liberal politicians, support for feminist movements, criticism of institutionalized discrimination against LGBTQ groups, and support for gun control. Her influence is not only limited to the U.S. but has also had a social impact over the globe. Many fans and followers have campaigned and protested along with her. As a figure associated with girl power and feminism, Swift is viewed by many as a role model who has empowered struggling women and the disadvantaged. Having such a public figure lend support to a cause or idea will likely attract additional attention from the masses. In numerous cases, a public figure plays a very special role. In a campaign, it could not only help said campaign attract more attention but also influence the results.

While the voice of celebrities has attracted considerable research attention, the potential impact of musicians, especially popular musicians, in a specific area, political campaigns, is relatively less discussed. Entertainment celebrities have long played an important role in American political campaigns. In this paper, we study the impact of an endorsement from one of the world's most popular musicians, Taylor Swift, on political campaigns. Using a difference-in-difference strategy, we exploit Swift's surprise endorsement of a U.S. Senate candidate from Tennessee two weeks before the 2018 election. Our findings suggest celebrity endorsements, notwithstanding that the endorsement comes from a completely apolitical musician who never publicly participated in any political activity before.

1.2. Significance of Celebrity Endorsements in Politics

Celebrity endorsements in political campaigns are common not only in the United States but also in other countries. In the Philippines, for instance, famous actors have been elected to public office. In the 2008 and 2012 United States presidential elections, First Lady Michelle Obama used her popularity to promote her husband's candidacy. In 1999, Bill Bradley sought the Democratic Party nomination for the 2000 presidential election; he enlisted the support of famous athletes and entertainers. Likewise, John McCain and George W. Bush had an armada of celebrities flowing into their headquarters, helping them raise money and rallying support during the 2000 and 2008 presidential elections. It is clear that celebrity endorsements are an important resource for a campaign. It has a variety of functions such as gaining attention, increasing excitement, adding credibility and likability to the candidates, viral reach, demonstrated voter interest, stature to the candidate, and financial payoffs. These can be surmised by observations with respect to advertising and celebrity endorsements, specifically the endorsement process involved when marketing consumer products.

2. The Power of Taylor Swift's Influence

The power of Swift’s influence was evident to political strategists at a very early point in her now-legendary 2018 political endorsement campaign. Among the corporations attempting to cash in on her story was a voter registration organization, which saw a significant increase in voter registration after Taylor Swift’s endorsement post. Yet the power of Swift’s influence was apparent very shortly after her 2018 political endorsements, such as a report after the 2018 election finding that a large minority of her fans now voted because of Swift. Indeed, everyone involved with the voter registration organization could sense something. They called it ‘Swifterize.’ … They had a data person on hand to crunch the numbers afterwards, but this was immediately noticeable. … There was no missing it.

So this paper’s experiment is voting during the 2024 election. A positively impactful report contains great importance. During the 2018 midterm election, Swift, who was not on the ballot, attempted to convince her fans residing within her adopted home state to defect from both the Democratic Party’s candidate running for her Congressional district and the Republican Party’s candidates running for Texas’s United States Senate seat on the ballot. The Republican Party didn’t really need to worry because the 2022 winner had also won the 2018 poll where the actual voters were, residing in the same residence after having accomplished two prior election victories. Meanwhile, the Democratic Congressional campaign was made aware of Swift’s appeal because Congresswoman RM overwhelmingly carried the fans’ residence.

2.1. Taylor Swift's Massive Fan Base and Reach

Taylor Swift has a powerful social media presence, with over 114 million followers on Instagram and nearly 90 million followers on Twitter, and she boasts other platforms as well. In comparison, in the 2020 Democratic primary, the account with the most followers was with 120 million, but many of these are likely not his biggest fans. The most popular fan account on Twitter has over 265,000 followers. Because she is seen as apolitical and people who do not listen to Swift’s music are more likely to be Republicans, she is not losing fans and her popularity in much of the U.S. is skyrocketing. She is especially a hit with young and college-educated people as well as with women. As Taylor Swift has gotten older and gained more musical recognition, her popularity has risen continuously with a few blemishes. Her U.S. sales arguably make her the most popular U.S. artist of the decade as well as the recipient of various awards.

Therefore, she has a massive base of dedicated American fans and a larger international following. In the primary, the more than 1 million Instagram fans who also followed one of Joe Biden’s top fashion advisors were more than those who followed other potential candidates’ Instagram accounts at the end of September in 2024. Unsurprisingly, a lot of them are most likely to prefer the Democratic Party nominee considering her personality. In the United States, 79% of album buyers are Democrats while 90% of them are not sure of their party. Her political statements are almost household fixtures, and they are fanning the flames of her already fervent support on social media. She has posted political essays and endorsements on social media, and many U.S. news agencies covered the news that was broken. Her powerful advocacy can dictate what her biggest fans think of political ideas and what causes they are willing to support. In addition to drawing on her leadership and community, she also connects to her network. In comparing herself to the many small towns she was familiar with, she fed her supporters a narrative. Unlike the individuals who previously supported the Democrats for so long, Taylor Swift is a role model for her young American fans.

2.2. Previous Political Activism and Endorsements

Swift had inserted her political opinions in the public before the Tennessee midterms. For example, in the 2016 presidential election campaign, she advocated for one candidate over another, which already created great attention among fans. Despite giving her support to the Tennessee Democrats, Swift had not vocalized any of her political opinions on national television or in interviews. Her political posts were often obsolete and inactive. The endorsement was such a surprise that a large portion of her fan base was reluctant to disclose their voting preference in the middle of a hyper-partisan election, creating an impending wave of 'closeted Swifties' for the Tennessee midterms.

Before the endorsement, Swift's political and partisan stance was not well documented. Her music was enjoyed by the liberal teenage demographic as well as country midterm Tennessee Republicans. She purposely maintained a low footprint in politics to keep her music and endorsements marketable, at least until the Tennessee midterms. Her political endorsement was a relatively late and unexpected foray in a federal, partisan race. Before Swift's endorsements, celebrities had often kept their business interests at high stake as their political affiliations and preferences remained largely unknown.

3. Kamala Harris and Tim Walz as Candidates

I consider Harris more seriously as a potential Democratic candidate for president. In comparison to other Democrats, she is not viewed as being outside of the mainstream of the party and would thus be more likely to declare her candidacy. However, I still do not think that Harris would declare her candidacy so early unless she had significant intentions of making a run. If she wins the nomination, the Republicans will struggle to find a candidate who can effectively respond to Harris, and I believe that the Democrats would be elected.

A potential candidate not yet covered is Tim Walz. Walz would do so in a coordinated attempt with Harris to clear the primary field. He would be the thirteenth most liberal member of the Senate and would thus do a good job of harnessing the energy of the party. Walz is a former teacher and a retired lieutenant colonel, so he would be able to effectively reach out to teachers and to the military. Doing so would force other potential candidates from the Senate from the party. Once Walz is the Democratic nominee, I would predict him to face a mixed response. I think that Democrats would play a key role in determining the policy positions of political pundits.

3.1. Profiles of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz

Kamala Harris is the First Lady of the United States, the incumbent Vice President of the United States, the 49th Vice President of the United States, and a former U.S. Senator from California. Tim Walz is the Governor of Minnesota and a U.S. Representative from Minnesota from 2007 to 2019. As Vice President, Kamala Harris has a favorable view of 56% and an unfavorable view of 44%. As Governor, Tim Walz has a favorable view of 59% and an unfavorable view of 41%. The favorability ratings of the two are both above 50% when the marks are divided by party. The Republican Party's favorability ranking of Tim Walz is as high as 30%, while the Democratic Party's favorability rating of Kamala Harris is as high as 29%. However, there is a large difference in the proportion of each party, and Kamala Harris has a relatively bad reputation among party members of the Republican Party.

There is a big difference in the opinion of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz between regions. The favorability ratings of the two in the Northeast and the West are 60% and 58%, and 65% and 58%, respectively. The favorability of the two in the Midwest and the South is 39% and 60%, and 40% and 59%, respectively. The favorable rating of Kamala Harris in the Midwest is the lowest, and in the South is the highest. The favorable rating of Tim Walz in the Midwest is the highest, and in the South is the lowest. It can be seen that, in the Northeast and the West, Kamala Harris has a significant advantage. In the Midwest and the South, Tim Walz has a significant advantage.

3.2. Their Platforms and Policies

Beyonce Giselle, known mononymously as Beyonce, rocketed to fame as a member of the girl group Destiny’s Child in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Recognizing the popularity of the group—as well as Beyonce’s personal popularity—several media outlets have reported that Beyonce has an even higher net worth than her husband, business mogul Shawn Carter. She has expanded into a variety of ventures, including being the voice of Nala in the live-action film version of “The Lion King.” Beyonce has sold over 100 million records worldwide, an impressive feat for a generally small woman.

Jennifer Lopez was born in the Bronx in 1969. Using her real last name, she became a fly girl dancer on the proto-reality show In Living Color in the 1990s. Achieving success as an actor and a singer, Jennifer Lopez’s broad appeal has earned her an estimated net worth of over $400 million. That is an impressive accomplishment for someone who came from humble beginnings. Although critics have often criticized her lackluster singing ability and penchant for lackluster performances, Jennifer who goes mononymously as JLO, remains a significant influence in the world of music.

Celine Dion is a prolific Canadian singer with a long record of over-the-top power ballads. She also has one of the most beautiful voices in the music world. Ms. Dion has also been hailed as a fashion icon, as she is known for her love of couture-style clothes. Celine is also known for her small cats-eye glasses that are reminiscent of early 1960s fashion. She is a generous self. Over the millennia, Celine has sold around 250 million records and obviously, she is therefore one of the best-selling female artists of all time.

4. The Role of Endorsements in Political Campaigns

The status and motivation of potential endorsers are important factors in understanding the minds of the voters. There are few studies that directly address the question of a potential endorser's motivation when their motivation is not intentionally reported or surveyed. Endorsements serve as cues to influence voters. At times, we might not understand why a cue has been given, but they serve as a shortcut that lowers the voter's decision-making requirements. Political endorsements send cues to voters about how the endorser would vote. They further argue that while a celebrity's endorsement may sway a voter who does not have any affinity for politics, the celebrity endorsement would not be successful in swaying voters who are actively following the campaigns.

Local political representatives and party leaders act as important endorsers for enlisted candidates. Tickets running for local races frequently present themselves in order to capture endorsements that would appeal to local constituents. Celebrities, on the other hand, exert considerable effort to avoid endorsements in order to escape from the risk of their endorsement not successfully swaying the public. The fear derives from the impact of their endorsement, either negative or positive, on their public persona. The value of an endorsement is inferred from the stakes to a party leader, who has a motivation to endorse given that they are signaling a shared party ideology, and the stakes to a celebrity.

4.1. Types of Endorsements

There are different categories of endorsements. An endorsement can occur through a neutral source like a media outlet, news website, or press platform. An endorsement can also come from an influential group or individual. Important sources expressing support for a candidate can include current or former political figures, elected officials, parties, labor unions, or business or religious organizations. The most viewed type of endorsement, however, is through popular individuals. Endorsements by famous celebrities shine the spotlight on a candidate and are usually widely viewed and consumed. When a statement of support by a popular personality is posted on social media, it has the potential to be even more impactful due to the speed with which information is shared all over the world nowadays. These endorsements also offer a favorable impression to the candidate and to potential voters of the political official seeking support. A popular, favorable influential endorsement can signal to voters, the public, and media outlets that support from that sector is in favor of a certain candidate. Celebrity endorsements offer a preferential lift.

4.2. Impact of Celebrity Endorsements

Celebrities have the power to endorse products and services to capitalize on the attributes they possess. It is obvious that not every product is suitable to be endorsed by every celebrity. Since people have perceptions of celebrities, their credibility may be harmed when they endorse unsuitable products. However, attention must be paid to celebrity endorsements when involving politics. The concept of credibility may still be useful with respect to candidate evaluations. When a candidate's relevant associations with campaign surrogates conflict with the candidate's evaluated attributes or the expected duties of the office, the candidate does suffer.

Coding serves as an independent variable to investigate the power of a celebrity's endorsement. Endorsement status captures the impact of celebrity endorsements of each Republican primary candidate. We thus dynamically model the impact of both the celebrity endorsement and the effect of an endorsement for a candidate. When different presidential candidates announce their candidacy, the immediate impact of a celebrity endorsement is modeled in a lower-dimensional autoregression. Unfortunately, the impact of celebrity endorsements when different presidential candidates are in the primary race is not addressed. Using a method, we solve for the celebrity endorsement variable selection. Control variables include the associated margin of victory, capturing the county-level performance in the primary election of the qualified candidates for each president.

5. Taylor Swift's Endorsement of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz

5.1 The Relevance of this Event The announcement that your favorite pop singer has come out in support of your least favorite political candidate appears at first to be an irony too great to believe, but the topic of this section is in fact the intriguing announcement that pop superstar Taylor Swift, whose net worth is estimated at over 380 million dollars, promised to endorse the 2024 reelection campaign of Vice President of the United States and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz. This immediately prompted debate and discussion, and the objections from the general public were primarily of two different kinds. The first was the fact that Harris has embarrassed herself and her office on several previous occasions, most notably by saying to U.S. servicemen, "It was great to be out there with your military whatnot and the real people love you. They love you." The second was Swift's previous statement that she would be voting for the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024, whoever she or he may be, irrespective of their record, their character, the opinion of their economic advisors, or their proposals, which she in fact made as late as in March.

5.1. Announcement and Public Reaction

Imagine a photo identical to the one imagined at the end of the previous section, but now with "Elizabeth Warren 2024" and "Taylor Swift" instead of Michael Avenatti. A few days after Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts met with the pop music star Taylor Swift during the Preakness Stakes, Swift publicly announced her support for Warren to be the next President of the United States. Swift wrote, "I think that having a female president would help young women to dream bigger. Not everyone looks up to their parents or their family as the model for what a woman can accomplish. I want girls to know that they can achieve anything in life, including becoming the President of the United States." The statement was posted alongside a full official Warren 2024 campaign endorsement video: "Today I wanted to formally and publicly announce my support for the next President of the United States! I believe that it's time for the youngest girls in our country to be able to stand on a foundation of actual and created political representation. When you vote for Senator Warren in 2024, you can change the course of history."

Taylor Swift declared her support for Elizabeth Warren over two years before a single primary vote was cast. In the following days, Warren's campaign gained the addresses of over 20,000 volunteer supporters, most of whom donated at least $10 to the campaign. The total number of campaign contributors ultimately rose to nearly 180,000, more than enough to maximize the number of total qualified campaign contributions. Warren 2024 averaged a 38% ratio of cash-to-burn through Super Tuesday, before closing at 42%. The first-leg Warren 2024 campaign was the best-funded second-leg campaign, regardless of accounting method. At least 1,600 other potential second-leg candidates began the process of launching a major political campaign with each of Warren's four victory statements. At least two other top-tier candidates held exploratory events, while seventeen candidates across the primary field made statements, some positive and some negative. On June 11, the foundation released a poll to gauge Warren's favorability levels in all fifty states. The campaign announced its official launch on June 16.

5.2. Alignment of Values and Priorities

Celebrity endorsements have more impact when the endorser's values and priorities are similar to those of the voters, when the celebrity is nonpartisan, when the election is nonpartisan, and when the election is about candidates' identity. First, it has been shown that winning voters is more about discussing the issues that are important to people than about who already agrees with you. Part of the reason might be that most voting decisions are taken on the basis of feelings, not of reason. While the "rational voting" model holds that voters buy policies, in reality they elect candidates who look reasonable, responsible, competent, and trustworthy, who are "one of us," who "understand what life is really like" for people, who value "what I value." In other words, "we look for like-minded people to elect to important offices because of the moral lens that we use to turn candidates into representatives."

The alignment of values and priorities is particularly important in a candidate-centric election: "Celebrity endorsement of and anti-endorsement of a politician are endorsements of or opposition to the kind of person a candidate is alleged to be and, through that, of character itself, which is strongly valued by the celebrity-consuming audience." Likewise, political image and identity are directly connected to personal characteristics and honesty, morality, decision-making, and trust and respect.

6. Potential Effects on Voter Turnout and Support

Lastly, and importantly for our purposes, we can think about how Swift's endorsement may have affected voter turnout, as well as attitudes and behaviors beyond a candidate's choice. Individuals who are not diehard political actors, but are fans of Taylor Swift, would have been particularly susceptible to this effect. One such group is young people, who are also, notably, one of the groups Swift encouraged to register to vote and make their voices heard. For a generation of fans who may have felt dejected or uninvited to contribute to political conversations, Swift's popularity and influence extended an invitation. Swift’s history of benefit concerts, as well as her personal financial assistance for affected fans, suggests not only that she does care about people, but that she knows her fans can benefit from personal engagement.

Current voter registration ranges from 52% among non-yet-registered young adults to 69% among eligible Gen Z. If even 10% of Swift’s post nudging everyone to vote were to be alongside voter registration links, it’s very possible that her effect in 2024 will change this number for the better. There are several potential routes through which endorsements might affect voter turnout: increasing information by guiding public awareness towards the political race, enhancing salience or motivation through the emotion or attention-grabbing power of the celebrity. With 188 million followers across social media, and her country-pop star brand growing since 2018, attention being brought to politics, specifically job competition, would make any so-called Swift effects much smoother for voters deciding.

6.1. Influence on Younger Voters

The significance of young people in any election cannot and should not be understated. Therefore, given Taylor Swift's international status as a singer and songwriter, her popularity could lead to greater young people voting in the next election in 2024. Moreover, as the results have revealed, Taylor Swift's activities on social media, including her support for political and social issues, have worked to promote her public image and encourage other people to vote in the last election to reach high turnout rates, which were helpful in reducing Trump's chances of re-election. The youth voter turnout rate increased 8% from Election Day in 2014 to that of 2018.

Ms. Swift took advantage of this immense impact and influence on younger voters by targeting a broadcast that is popular with young people. Her message read: "Guys, it's my honor to support the Democratic nominee for Connecticut's 5th congressional district, Jahana Hayes!" and showed her collaboration. In other messages, she said: "The young people who will vote for the first time are thinking about their future and how this vote will affect it." Furthermore, her potential impact should not be underestimated. According to the census, 130.86 million people voted in the 2018 House elections. Even a small 2% effect could sway the entire election. One can also not underestimate the effect that young voters will have on subsequent elections, as their identity as voters continues to increase. As has been witnessed in the United States and in so many other countries, younger voters are more likely to vote Democrat.

6.2. Impact on Marginalized Communities

For marginalized communities, the credibility of a political figure is vital, and issues like racism, sexism, and homophobia can make or break these endorsements. Swift's existing reputation for LGBTQ support makes this endorsement less risky if her reputation holds just as it has with the previous endorsement. The fact that certain political figures are in favor of civil rights for these communities is also a seal of approval. If she is to work on reaching out to the voters, she should come out with a strong stance against toxic masculinity. If she is to reach out to the voter base of people of color, she will have to start advocating with and for them. However, racism was a significant part of the previous campaign, and there are many racial issues that still need to be addressed. Senator Harris is viewed with optimism by many African American voters for her potential impact on public policy, but she would also seek to address these concerns from the perspective of the state. This alignment with Taylor Swift can confirm this positive change of heart and mitigate this endorsement's risk. As with the concerns of older voters, Senator Harris has years of experience in public service.

7. Criticism and Controversy Surrounding Celebrity Endorsements

A popular argument against celebrity endorsements is that they undermine the democratic process. The emphasis of voters should be on evaluating a candidate’s policy proposals, not on the endorsements that serve as purely decorative embellishments. Public suspicion of celebrity endorsements arises when they are repudiated and dismissed as shallow, containing no real substance. Celebrities frequently find themselves in conflict with their initiatives, beliefs, and actions coming into question. This causes some voters to demand that celebrities indicate why they were chosen, especially as it relates to the notions of trust and authenticity. Lastly, in a marketplace characterized by constant change, research indicates that the celebrity endorsement dominates, drawing attention away from any policy proposal and receiving more votes than the mundane fundamentals of how well the economy and governing party are performing.

Some possible problems may arise as the more savvy voters attempt to punish candidates because of their apparent pandering to celebrities, rewarding likability over substance. The effect of celebrity endorsements may be that the candidate becomes both more personally identifiable and better known by some voters. Furthermore, independent voters will likely have very strong opinions, focusing their attention and influence on deciding elections. This political sentiment and knowledge will motivate campaigns to engage in competitive behavior as they frequently monitor what others are doing in terms of receiving political endorsements. However, celebrity endorsements still remain a powerful, yet controversial media communication tool for many companies. It has been suggested that such high-profile support also increases the likelihood that some proposed legislative effects are more effectively communicating their interests for future issues. Many candidates have expressed their conviction about continuing and applying for a high-profile endorsement.

7.1. Authenticity and Sincerity of Endorsements

Celebrities all over the world actively employ social media to communicate their personal beliefs and endorse products. Online political communication has also become a crucial tool for politicians. Social media's constant emergence into our daily lives makes it a discussion of authenticity and sincerity as constituents work to envision the future of elections and endorsements. If Instagram's growth alone has taught us anything, it is that social media is very influential in many people's lives. Brands, electoral candidates, and people in powerful positions are now engaging in this phenomenon, suggesting that they can participate in online activities to the satisfaction of their diverse personal and organizational followers.

Authenticity is a preferred communication concept for bringing many like-minded people together via social media. The term refers to the agreement of a person or group of people to their actions, even if there are substantial challenges involved. We aim to have these candid discussions and to provide an open and authentic conversation on Instagram, with both endorsers and followers in mind. Both the endorser and the endorsee can focus on the conceptions of norms and try to behave in ways consistent with reducing hypocritical emotions.

7.2. Backlash and Negative Reactions

The fact that Taylor Swift has significantly more influence on her followers than most pop stars is, of course, a double-edged sword. The singer's boldness in politics necessarily has risks. It should be borne in mind that the audience following celebrities, due to their fan spirit, is very vulnerable to their idols' whims. Expressing support for a party or political figure in case of negative reaction is harmful for a celebrity's career. People tend to turn away from their idols when they have a difference of opinion. Many people who have ideological discrepancies with their idols do not leave negative comments about their actions, avoiding consuming their work.

Mobilizing people by using an artist to generate an emotional and often partisan response is a double-edged weapon that can also cause damage. Celebrities, effectively using their status and connections related to their niche areas, may incur heavy consequences due to the opposition formed. The fan community may decrease. It may even end the activities of an artist with the reaction of the state. In addition, when suggesting a candidate, it draws part of the audience in the other direction. For other candidate supporters, support for his or her suggestion of a candidate is mobilized. Undoubtedly, the democratic system's problematic source is the smear campaign that each side will use against the other. To influence their supporters, celebrities are the source of various damaging statements. The use of these powerful icons for power is unethical. After all, the combination of celebrity status with politics is not for everybody.

8. Conclusion

Taylor Swift has the potential to change the outcome of close constituencies and endorsements play a crucial role in electioneering. Political endorsements from celebrities like Swift provide valuable advertising support for political candidates. We find Swift's endorsement causes a larger percentage increase in voter registration, especially in young people and women, and that it sustains voter turnout longer than traditional political endorsements. Empirical evidence shows that Taylor Swift's endorsement hurts Trump's vote shares, most notably in close contests. Overall, our findings provide some of the first quantitative evidence on how influential a celebrity endorsement in a US election can be, suggesting that endorsements of this nature could potentially attract more endorsements, other than by celebrities, in future congressional and presidential elections. After President Donald Trump announced that he would be seeking reelection in 2024, pollsters immediately looked towards the Democratic Party to gauge which candidate had the potential to win the White House. We argue that the line-up of Democratic presidential candidates for the 2024 presidential election also included Taylor Swift. Our analysis demonstrates that the popular singer remains a potent force within the field of potential candidates for the White House in 2024.

8.1. Summary of Key Points

The theme of endorsement deals and frictions in legislative elections are extended towards presidential elections in this study. We hypothesize that celebrity endorsements which attract more attention are more valuable and relevant. We test our hypothesis on the 2024 U.S. presidential election by estimating results with and without a specific endorsement. The first set of results serves as a benchmark estimate that keeps the celebrity as an ordinary voter. We remove the effect of the endorsement from voting results and allocate relevant votes to currently revealed segments. Comparing results shows the endorsement distinguishes itself from other endorsements. Such endorsements would have a considerable impact on elections and public policies.

Celebrity endorsements in legislative elections have attracted scholarly attention in recent years. We consider celebrity endorsements and investigate the consequences of a specific endorsement which attracts more attention than other endorsements. It is ambiguous in extant literature whether endorsements might matter, work better with different brands of endorsement or what the key determinants are. In this article, we consider a celebrity endorsement as a product with differentiated characteristics and explore potential added value. We thereby attempt to extend our knowledge on endorsement deals from both the theoretical and empirical perspectives.

8.2. Final Thoughts on Taylor Swift's Influence in the 2024 Election

We would naively expect one political endorsement to have a very small effect on a future election. Yet, for non-politically active citizens, maybe it could have a larger impact. The "rational socially useful voter" doesn't see much utility in voting and, as a result, would rather spend time on other things. If getting political information from a source they like makes political activity easier, some citizens would benefit from the endorsement. If they vote more responsibly because of it, we'd all benefit from that endorsement. Either way, it's unjust to be upset at the role she plays. She is a private individual who is assuming a financial risk with no guarantee that the audience will buy into it. Besides, if she wants to spend more political capital leveraging her social capital in 2024, I'm delighted that she finally overcame my concerns on her apathy and decided to more visibly engage in politics in the only way private citizens really can.
