The Evils of Christian Nationalism

The False Gospel of Christian Nationalism

Christian Nationalism is not faith — it’s a political power grab wrapped in a Bible cover. It distorts the teachings of Jesus into a tool for domination, exclusion, and violence. At its core, this ideology proclaims that the United States was divinely ordained as a “Christian nation,” and that true patriotism requires allegiance not only to God, but to a specific brand of right-wing politics. Yet no serious reading of the Gospels supports such a claim.

Jesus, a man who refused political titles and rejected violence, would never have endorsed the merging of religion and nationalism. When pressed about paying taxes to Caesar, he famously said, *“Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”* It was a declaration that the kingdom of God is not an earthly empire. When his disciples wanted to use force in his defense, he rebuked them. When crowds tried to crown him king, he fled. The Jesus of scripture had no interest in power — only in justice, compassion, and truth.

Christian Nationalism inverts this message. It seeks to impose a religious identity on a pluralistic nation, demanding that others conform or be cast out. It sanctifies political leaders who promise to “restore” America to an imagined moral past — one that conveniently centers white, conservative Christians and erases everyone else. The cross becomes a cudgel; the flag becomes an idol. It is a theology of control masquerading as a movement of faith.

In practice, Christian Nationalism leads to cruelty: laws that strip away women’s autonomy, persecution of LGBTQ people, censorship of teachers and librarians, and the denial of rights to non-Christians. It baptizes authoritarianism and calls it righteousness. And it ignores that Jesus repeatedly sided with the poor, the sick, the foreigner, and the condemned — the very people Christian Nationalists often demonize.

The danger is not just spiritual but civic. A democracy cannot survive when one religious faction claims divine ownership of the nation. Freedom of religion — including the freedom *from* religion — was central to the founding of the United States. Christian Nationalism undermines that principle by elevating one faith above all others, creating a hierarchy of citizenship that Jesus himself would have condemned.

If Christians wish to follow Jesus, they must reject the idols of power and nationalism. The true gospel does not need the endorsement of a government or the protection of a flag. It asks only that believers love their neighbors, seek justice, and walk humbly with God. Christian Nationalism offers the opposite: arrogance cloaked in holiness.

Jesus did not come to build an empire. He came to liberate humanity from the chains of hate and fear — the very tools Christian Nationalists now wield. To follow Christ is to resist their false gospel and reclaim the faith from those who would turn it into a weapon.
